How long should I run my pump for?

The first thing you should know is that even if you're not using your pool in the colder months, you should still run the pumps daily to keep your pool clean and prevent algae buildup.

Pool pump

If you've read our last article, you know that your pool pump serves two major functions: filtering dirt and debris and aiding in circulating chlorine. This is why you need to run pumps long enough to clean and chlorinate the entire pool.

How Long to Run Pool Pump in Summer

During the summer months, it's crucial to run your pool pump for the right amount of time to ensure your pool remains clean and free from algae. For most pools in Australia and New Zealand, the optimal pump run time is 8-10 hours per day. This duration helps to filter dirt and debris effectively while circulating chlorine throughout the pool.

How Long to Run Pool Pump

Knowing how long to run your pool pump is essential for maintaining clear and healthy pool water. Regardless of the season, it's important to run your pump every day. For winter months, a shorter run time of 4-6 hours per day is typically sufficient, while summer requires a longer duration due to increased usage and higher temperatures.

Generally, your pool should be run long enough to achieve one complete pool volume turnover in 4-6 hours for residential pools. If your pump's flow rate is too low, resulting in a longer turnover time, it indicates that the pump may be undersized and can result in other issues, such as persistent algae growth.

Pool Pump Run Time Calculator

To determine the exact run time for your pool pump, you need to consider the volume of your pool and the pump's flow rate. Here's a simple calculation method:

  1. Calculate Pool Volume: Multiply the length, width, and depth of your pool. Most backyard pools in Australia and New Zealand range between 40,000 and 100,000 litres.
  2. Determine Flow Rate: Check the pump's output, typically measured in litres per minute.
  3. Calculate Run Time: Divide the pool volume by the pump's flow rate to find the minimum hours needed.

For example, a 70,000-litre pool with a pump running at 210 litres per minute should be run for 333 minutes.

70,000 liters / 210 liters per minute = 333.33 minutes = 5.5-6 hours

There are other factors to consider when calculating your pump run time, such as air temperature, bather load, and weather conditions. A general good rule to follow is to add 1 hour of filtration time for every 10 degrees of air temperature above 15°C. For example, on a 25°C day, the pump should run for at least 10 hours.

Tips for Efficient Pool Pump Operation

  • Regular Monitoring: Check your pump and filter regularly to ensure they function efficiently.
  • Variable Speed Pumps: Consider upgrading to a variable speed pool pump. These pumps allow you to run the pump longer while saving money and reducing electricity costs.
  • Environment Factors: Increase pump run time during heavy pool usage, after rainstorms, or during extreme heat to maintain water clarity and hygiene.

Knowing how long to run your pool pump every day is the key to having a crystal-clear pool while also managing energy costs. By following these guidelines and using a pool pump run time calculator, you can optimise your pool maintenance routine effectively.
