These use a tried and tested technology, however with constant improvements being made in the development of product, gas is a great 'instant' way to heat your pool. Water is pumped through your normal filtration system and a gas heater is plumbed in the line, as water passes through the heater it goes through a series of tubes that are heated by the naked flame of the gas burners. The water is heated very quickly and then returned back into the pool.

These are very good at heating the pool very quickly as they use direct and constant heat from a flame either through natural gas or LPG tanks. A gas heater is an ideal choice for anyone who uses their pool sporadically throughout the year and may only want to heat it occasionally such as when friends are coming over or for the weekend.

Gas heaters come in a number of different sizes and should be sized correctly for the pool and they are generally measured in Mega Joules (Mj) or British Thermal Units (BTU's) for performance. In Australia the most common reference is Mj which is a standard for measuring energy, usually in reference to gas usage. Zodiac's range of Legacy LRZ heaters range from 132 Mj right up to 422 Mj which is able to heat a large 100,000L pool up to a warm 28°C in less than a day* during winter.

These are an ingenious product that harnesses the ambient heat found in the air, like a reverse cycle air conditioner. They "capture" heat energy from the air, compress it which increases its potential and release it into the pool. Heat pumps do this by using a refrigerant gas.

How can a refrigerant gas create heat you may ask? It does this because it boils at very low temperatures, the gas vapour is then squeezed and compressed through a series of tubes that the pool water passes over thereby heating it up. This is an extremely efficient method of creating heat. So, if you need to introduce 10 kW into the pool the heat pump will draw 8 kW from the air, consuming just 2 kW of electricity: this efficiency ratio is called COP (Coefficient of Performance) in this example, the COP is 5 (2kW used ÷ 10kW delivered = COP 5). Any COP around 5 in real world conditions is considered the benchmark.

Be careful when making brand comparisons as some companies show the COP when conditions are favourable overinflating their performance. COP should be measured when the temperature is low (exactly when you need the best from your heat pump). The COP for all Zodiac Heat pumps is determined when the temperature is at just 15°C.

The newest technology and one of the most energy efficient, yes even compared to solar! A heat pump uses the same principle as reverse cycle air conditioners. They extract heat from the air (even down to sub zero temperatures) and through a series of compression and transference technology it then heats the pool water. These work in almost any temperature with some models available to cater for sub zero temperatures as well as indoor installations.

The great benefit of this technology is the very low running cost, in a side by side comparison a heat pump will cost around 60% less to run than a gas heater making them perfect for anyone that wants to have their pool available 24/7 365days of the year. swfs/headerHeatPump.swf swfs/heatPoolWidgetHeatPump.swf The easiest way to find out the best heating solution for your pool is with our easy calculation system.

With just a few details about your pool and the way you enjoy it, we will instantly calculate a list of the most suitable systems, and their associated running costs, so you can compare and make an informed decision about which one is right for you.

Before you start, read these frequently asked questions:

What temperature is best for my pool?
Most people find 28°C to be the ideal temperature, but you can experiment and find the temperature that best suits you.

Will I need help installing it?
Yes, solar, gas and electric heating systems all require a licensed tradesperson for correct installation. Solar is very popular way to heat your pool. The process is simple, water is pumped up to the roof and runs through a series of tubes called collectors. The collectors are warmed by the heat of the sun and thus the water is heated as it passes through. The warmed water is then fed back into the pool.

To be completely effective the position of the collectors are best mounted on a north facing roof to get best exposure to the sun, plus you will require an extra pump to move the water to the collectors and a 'solar controller' to set the desired temperature for the pool.
swfs/headerSolarHowDoesItWork.swf swfs/howItWorksSolar.swf
Because most solar heating systems rely on the sun for their heat energy they are best suited to extending the swimming season during the warmer months. A solar product is great for allowing a few extra weeks maybe a month or two to the swimming season and for some pool owners they make a great addition to their swimming pool experience. For others that want to benefit from year round heating or heating on demand we recommend a heat pump or gas heater maybe a better solution.

If you are interested in a solar heating product we recommend talking to your local pool care professional who will be able to advise you on the best product for your needs.
