Even with regular sanitation pool water can, from time to time take on a dull flat look. This is caused by, amongst other things, non filtrable wastes such as body fats, suntan lotions, urine, perspiration etc some of which contribute significantly to the formation of chloramines.
Chloramines give off a distinctive chlorine smell. When this occurs it is important to bring the water back to its clean, safe, sparkling condition by shocking or superchlorinating the pool water.
If you have an outdoor pool, contamination from the environment can lead to your pool water needing to be shocked. Your pool should be shocked after a rain or wind storm, during a hot spell and usually once a week during the swimming season for general cleanliness.
There are effectively two ways to shock your pool you can superchlorinate using a chlorine based treatment such as
PQ Brilliant or
PQ Instant Pool Chlorine Pellets or use a non-chlorine oxidisation treatment such
PQ Ultimate Oxy Shock . The benefits of using either PQ Ultimate Oxy Shock or Brilliant is that you and your family can safely swim in the pool within 15 minutes of the product being added to the pool.
If you have a Zodiac Salt Chlorine Generator you simply need to turn on the superchlorinate function and let your chlorine generator do the work. However, we would also recommend adding a product such as
PQ Saltwater Boost on a regular basis during the peak of the season to keep your pool looking great.
At Zodiac, we recommend that you use a chlorine based shock treatment and a non-chlorine shock treatment alternatively on a regular basis. It is important to always shock or superchlorinate your pool at dusk to minimise sunlight destruction of chlorine. If you shock during the day any large dose of chlorine will be depleted quickly by the sun thereby reducing the effectiveness of your treatment.
Remember, before adding any shock treatment to your pool it is important to obtain the advice from your
Zodiac Pool Professional .
