About Algae

Swimming Pool Algae is a common problem for pool owners.  These microscopic one-celled plants enter your pool constantly from wind, rain – even the water with which you refill your pool.

Once in your pool, these tiny plants feed on nutrients contained within the water – they only need air, sunlight, water and a good supply of nutrients to grow. What starts as a virtually invisible invader can turn your pool into a slimy mess in no time.

Algae appears in various colours; the swimming pool industry classifies algae into three main types according to their colour – green, black and mustard.

GREEN ALGAE

Green algae is the most common form and is relatively easy to deal with as it tends to float.  It usually appears in corners or other areas where circulation is poor.

BLACK SPOT ALGAE & MUSTARD ALGAE

Black (also known as Black Spot) and Mustard algae cling to the pools surface particularly cracks and crevices.  They are unfortunately harder to deal with being extremely resistant to normal sanitiser treatments.

WHERE DOES ALGAE GROW?

Normally algae will grow most profusely in areas where there is poor circulation.  Poor circulation creates conditions that encourage algae to reproduce.  Pool steps and swimouts are favourite breeding grounds for algae due to poorer water circulation.

HOW DO I PREVENT ALGAE FROM GROWING?

The best way to prevent algae from establishing in your pool is to adopt a regular maintenance program and act promptly if an algae outbreak does occur.  Maintaining correct water balance and sanitiser level will usually keep algae under control.
