The drought has made us aware how precious water is to all Australians. Careful management of your swimming pool will use less water than the space, garden or lawn which the pool replaced. Nationally, swimming pools use less than 0.4% of water consumption- pool owners can help make this even less.
Correct water level
The water level in your pool should be halfway up the skimmer box opening. An overfilled pool wastes water and reduces the efficiency of the skimmer. If (with luck) sufficient rain over fills the pool, don’t waste the excess. Take the opportunity to backwash the pool or use the water taken from the pool to wash pavers and steps- the lower level of chemicals from rain affected pool water will not harm plants or lawn when used occasionally.
Topping up your pool
Install a rainwater tank to replace pool water lost through evaporation or splashing. Even a small light shower of rain can provide a surprising amount of water to use in the pool, on your garden or for washing the car.

Pool Covers
A pool cover or blanket is the most effective way to reduce the amount of water evaporating from your pool. In a year it can equal the total quantity of water in your pool – at least 30-40,000 litres.
A pool cover provides other benefits like:
- Keeping the pool cleaner
- Reducing chemical use
- Keeping the water warmer and extending the swimming season
